Fethiye is a town of Mugla Province of Turkey, located at the junction of Aegean & Mediterranean seas. Modern day Fethiye is built on the ancient city of Telmessos, ruins of which can be seen in the city. It is one of Turkey's well-known tourist centers and is especially prized during the summer.
It is 135 kms southwest of Marmaris and has an outstanding and busy marina. The ancient name of the city is Telmessos and you will see a fortress on the hill overlooking the city which was built by Knights of Rhodes Island. Fethiye is also known for its rock tombs carved into the faces of the high cliffs by the Lycians. Among these tombs especially remarkable one is the tomb of Amnytas dating from the 4th century BC, elaborately carved in Doric architectural style. It is worth well visiting. Other historical places around the town are the aSarcopghi and the Fethiye Tower.
Some of the other historical sites worth visiting are: Kadyanda Ancient City, Kayaköy- old Greek town, Afkule, Gemiler and Aya Nikola. Most popular touristic towns of Fethiye are: Ölüdeniz, Calis Beach area, Hisaronu and Ovacik.
The island Kızılada in the Gulf of Fethiye, which is 4 mi (6.4 km) off the city, is a popular stopover for boat tours. Alternatively, there are great diving sites Afkule being one of the most famous. The Kızılada Lighthouse on the island houses a seafood restaurant and a hostel with nine rooms. Butterfly Valley is in the Fethiye district.
Oludeniz is 14 km (9 mi) south of Fethiye. The town is a beach resort, and remains one of the most photographed beaches on the Mediterranean. It has a secluded sandy bay at the mouth of Oludeniz, a blue lagoon. The lagoon is legally recognized as a natural reserve and constructing buildings is strictly prohibited. Oludeniz is famous for its shades of turquoise and aquamarine, and is an official blue flag beach frequently rated among the top 5 beaches in the world by travelers and tourism journals alike. The resort is also famous for its paragliding opportunities. It is regarded as one of the best places in the world for paragliding due to its unique panoramic views, and the Baba Dag mountains exceptional height.
Fethiye Transportation
Fethiye has direct bus connections to many cities in the country including Marmaris, Bodrum, Antalya, Izmir, and Istanbul. Bus tickes from Istanbul cost roughly around 30 US $ pp and it takes around 12-14 hours.
The nearest airports served by international airlines are Dalaman. Antalya is about three hours driving and Dalaman about one hour from Fethiye. There is a private shuttle bus service from Dalaman Airport to Fethiye. There is also a bus by the City of Fethiye Transportation department, which is cheaper, running at every plane landing.
There are plenty of dolmuses and minibuses to get around the city and to local attractions such as Saklikent.. The beaches and the countryside are easily accessible. Regular bikes are also available, and the town is very walkable.
