In Korea, a significant portion of international marriages are still arranged through matchmaking. Arranged marriages generally refer to short-term matches found by Korean men through agencies. They have either missed the right age for marriage or have been unable to find a partner, and have chosen international marriage through matchmaking as an alternative. The target group is women from lower-income countries, such as Southeast Asia and Central Asia. They respond to matchmaking offers in hopes of a better life in Korea.
