Kika Sprangers (a), Robert Koemans (p), Tom Felices (d) and Wouter Kuhne (d).
With her velvety sound, sparkling musical language, and captivating compositions, the Dutch saxophonist Kika Sprangers (Nijmegen, 1994) is among the most heartwarming musicians our country has to offer. In her playing, she connects vulnerability and strength with full dedication. A vision that musically manifests itself in a preference for unconventional ensembles and arcs of tension from symphonically full passages to charged silences. Jazz poetry that speaks to your imagination.
Her album Mind’s Eye, an ode to imagination, was released on ZenneZ Records. In 2022 and 2023, the quintet toured Dutch jazz clubs and festivals such as North Sea Jazz, Bimhuis, LantarenVenster. Under the guidance of TivoliVredenburg and with support from the Performing Arts Fund, Kika followed a two-year new music maker trajectory. In this program, Kika recorded new music with her Large Ensemble and in duo with guitarist Mikkel Ploug and pianist Kit Downes, with whom she released the EPs Du Blomst and Mirage in 2024 on DOX Records. The Large Ensemble album “(In)finity” was released at the end of 2024 and last year was awarded an Edison in the National category. In 2024, Kika also received the Willem Breuker Prize.
Her new album Morning, which she recorded with Beiggja (with Kjetil Mulelid, Mats Eilertsen and Per Oddvar Johansen), was released in 2025 on the HUBRO label, followed by tours in the Netherlands and Norway. In 2025, Kika wrote a brand-new program for the North Sea Jazz Composition Commission A brand new program for the Netherlands Chamber Choir, Alistair Payne, Reinier Baas, Tijs Klaassen and Jonas Burgwinkel. Her new quintet album will be released in November this year.
