The Rex Club is one of the most respected electronic music venues in the world and a cornerstone of the Paris house scene.
Originally located in the basement of the Le Grand Rex, the space evolved through several stages. In the 1950s it operated as the nightclub La Rêve, a dance hall with jazz and live bands. In the 1970s the venue became a rock club known as Le Central, hosting concerts during the first wave of punk and new wave in Paris.
In 1988 the venue was transformed into the Rex Club and quickly became one of the first homes for house and techno in France. DJs and promoters such as Laurent Garnier helped shape its identity, and the club soon gained an international reputation.
Today the Rex Club remains one of the most important house and techno clubs in Europe and regularly appears in the Top 100 Clubs list published by DJ Magazine.
This video explores the history of the legendary Paris nightclub and its role in the development of house and techno.
