After FOUR attempts trying to fly military standby (Space-A), we finally made it on a flight to Asia… but getting to Japan was anything but smooth.
This travel day started at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, where we were racing against time. When flying standby, you can’t book hotels or flights in advance because nothing is guaranteed. So once we finally got seats, it became a full sprint to plan everything before takeoff—and we didn’t finish in time.
What followed was one of the most unpredictable travel days we’ve had.
Our journey took us from Seattle to an unexpected stop in Alaska (yes, Alaska ❄️), where freezing temperatures and snow were the last thing we expected. From there, we continued on a long-haul flight to Guam—hot, humid, and chaotic, with no WiFi and very little organization.
Finally, after hours of travel, delays, and paperwork, we landed in Okinawa, Japan ???????? late at night.
That’s when things took a turn.
After navigating baggage claim, waiting for documents, and finding a taxi, we arrived at our hotel… only to discover that check-in had already closed.
Time: 12:22 AM
Check-in cutoff: Midnight
Result: Locked out.
With no ability to make phone calls and no front desk in sight, we genuinely thought we might be sleeping outside in Japan.
What happened next completely changed the night.
This is the reality of budget travel, standby flights, and chasing incredible deals like $22 tickets across the world. It doesn’t always go according to plan—but that’s where the real adventure begins.
And we’re not done yet.
Our Vietnam visas still aren’t approved… and we’re supposed to fly out in less than 24 hours.

We have been working and traveling the world together since 2016. We have decided to "risk it all"! We quit our jobs, sold our cars and are hoping to 'live like locals' as vagabonds traveling the world. To record and share our experiences with family & friends we are creating these short videos from our travels. We hope you enjoy! - Steven & Elaine
