I spent 1.5 months traveling across Central Asia by land. Overall, this was probably the most exhausting period of travel I’ve ever experienced in my 3.5 years of full-time travel. Extremely remote border crossings, day-long journeys in crowded marshrutkas and shared taxis, language barriers, and the resulting sense of isolation were just some of the challenges I faced.
But at the same time, those weeks were incredibly rewarding. I met some of the friendliest locals, experienced several unique cultures across four countries, and got to discover a variety of new cuisines along the way.
In this vlog, I want to share my honest experiences of what it’s like to travel through Central Asia by land as a solo female traveler — the good, the bad, and what it’s like to be a foreign woman in conservative and remote regions largely dominated by men.
