“Losers back home” – that’s what foreigners moving to Da Nang, Vietnam are being called. It’s a label catching on in places across Southeast Asia that are gentrifying because of foreigners moving in, such as Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. Where people are struggling with the higher cost of living AND some visitors behaving recklessly or disrespectfully. (Though it’s worth noting foreigners have also created a lot of jobs and boosted local economies as well). The phrase is catching like wildfire in Da Nang, which rose to fame as the cheapest city in Southeast Asia, and has experienced a huge influx of foreign visitors in the last few years, for that reason. To be clear, I personally don’t consider anyone a loser back home, and if I did that would be hypocritical since I have the same struggles as many “losers back home” who moved abroad!
