Living here isn’t just an escape from the U.S. It is a necessary chapter in my life that I always knew was coming. I’ve always wanted to live in a different country and Oaxaca’s magic simply called me.
Of course there is controversy about Americans moving to Mexico, and the reasons are clear. But I’m not just here to take advantage of the beautiful beaches, to exploit the country’s plant medicine, or to benefit from “how cheap” everything is (while I appreciate these aspects with soooo much gratitude). But in reality I am here to learn. My goal whenever I travel is to sit with the land and with the people and try to listen. Perhaps what I learn can change my life for the better and maybe I can take this back to my country— share it with people from the United States and help us learn how to be part of a solution…
“How cheap” is in quotes because it is not considered cheap for many people living here. So note to travelers: please stop going to other countries shouting about how cheap everything is, because you’re referring to someone’s monthly income.
